HUYE – The National University of Rwanda (NUR) through its Centre for Environment, Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Development (CEESD) on Monday met its PhD students studying abroad in order to assess the progress of their research work.

The students are pursuing Entrepreneurship, Environment and Sustainable Development PhD related programmes in different universities in Sweden.

The four students who made presentations on the progress of their research papers in Rwanda are part of the 152 NUR academic staff pursuing PhD programmes abroad.
According to Esperance Kabalisa, the CEESD deputy director, the meeting brought together students, their supervisors and other NUR staff.

"Most of these students are about to complete their research projects so it is important to know at this stage how their research will help in addressing the challenges that we are currently faced with as a nation,” said Kabalisa.

The CEESD deputy director observed that most of the environmental challenges are caused by entrepreneurs and their activities.

"We want to see how the research being conducted addresses these environmental concerns. We are trying to avoid a situation where students write dissertations only for academic gains. We want these research projects to directly address issues related to our centre’s working policy,” she added.

Theophile Niyonzima, a PhD student at Goteborg University in Sweden noted that interacting with other researchers is important because it makes the research more comprehensive.
