KARONGI - The remains of 40 genocide victims which were recovered last week have been reburied, putting to rest the controversy that surrounded the remains.

There was controversy last week as some people claimed that the remains which were exhumed were not for human beings.
The remains which some said to be of ‘abnormal’ sizes were unearthed in Nyarusanza village, Bwishyura Sector in Karongi District.

But a team composed of police officials and local elders who were involved in the operation  later confirmed that they were human remains. Relatives of the victims readily established the identity of one of the deceased.

"These are the remains of our brother who was brutally murdered during the Genocide and his body buried just behind our house,” a grieving relative who declined to be mentioned said.

The remains  were laid to rest at a Genocide memorial site in Bwishyura sector.

During the reburial, Alphonse Ruzindana, the representative of the umbrella Association of Genocide Survivors (IBUKA) reiterated that perpetrators of the Genocide should help in directing the public where victims were dumped in order to restore love and promote reconciliation.

"In order to rebuild the country and restore unity and reconciliation, it is important that we get to know where our loved ones were dumped after being killed  so that we can accord them a decent burial,” Ruzindana said.
