Editor,

Being born with a disability isn’t by choice. Becoming disabled can happen to anyone at anytime.  The disabled are simply people with physical abnormalities. They include the blind, mute and the lame.

These disadvantaged people have continued to lag behind in everything just because the society segregates them. Traditionally, the disabled were considered to be as good as dead in the eyes of society.

They were regarded a curse by the very families they belong to. The vulnerable are considered unproductive to the community.

These vulnerable people only lack empowerment, acceptance and skills sets to become key people in the society. Whereas neighboring countries have achieved quality education for the vulnerable, Rwandans have seemed to prefer segregating them instead of helping them.

The fact is that nothing can ever be changed about them physically; but if we accept them in the society and grant their needs, the vulnerable will be useful and will help develop the country.
