KARONGI — Karongi District Advisory Council has overwhelmingly voted Sebastian Hakizimana as the new Vice- Mayor in charge of Finance and Economy.

He replaces Jean Baptiste Hakizimana, who was arrested early this year for allegedly defrauding the district of over Rwf100,000. His case has since taken another twist after additional charges centering on genocide were also leveled against him.

Hakizimana garnered 183 votes out of 310 while his challenger got less than 65 in a secret ballot vote held at the provincial headquarters in Karongi early this week.

In his acceptance speech, the newly elected leader who is the former director of economic planning in Gasabo District, pledged commitment and cooperation with district staff- adding that improving the lives of the local population will be his priority.

"I will work to improve farming methods for coffee, bananas and tea growing. I will in the process ensure the provision of modern seeds that resist infections,” he said.

The 39-year old leader comes into office at a time when the district administration faces a lot of criticism from various leaders and locals over alleged under performance.

Last month, former State Minister of Local Government Christine Nyatanyi lashed out at district leaders who had attended a provincial meeting, for delays in implementing a number of government programmes.
