Editor,

In his monthly press conference, the President, was asked about why the redistribution of land in the Eastern province and Gishwati forest was not transparent.

His Excellency answered that though not all issues were settled but the on-going process was good and on the right path.

It is on this point that I want to comment. I think a lot more should be done to find a solution to the land issues. Due to the lack of tenancy agreements we expected an overhaul exercise -which I think it was not.

I, personally, seem to have experienced some issues with this policy of land distribution or redistribution as it may fancy you.

For a fact, the land commission was not as transparent and fair as it was presumed to be, and that is why some of those people who had big chunks of land remained with it because the connived with  some members of the commission to allow them to register their siblings and other family members.

Therefore, my solutions would be to have an accountability committee to overhaul the entire process to avoid situations where close relative are given land by the former owners.
