Council approves Mayor’s resignation

NYAMASHEKE - The resignation of the Mayor of Nyamasheke District, Vincent Muragwa has been approved.The resignation was approved by the District Advisory Council (DAC) that convened for an extra ordinary meeting on Monday at Kagano Parish conference hall.

Muragwa tendered his resignation letter last Tuesday, attracting a lot of speculation among the district staff and area residents.The extra ordinary meeting begun at around 9:30.After a  6 hour session , Celestin Habyarimana, the council president announced that all the members had endorsed the mayor’s resignation.

"After all councilors had  made a thorough verification of Muragwa’s abrupt resignation, I therefore declare that we have today approved his resignation,” he said.

At the start of the meeting, several members of the DAC pressed Muragwa to disclose what inspired him to step down, but he maintained that he resigned for personal reasons.
Some councilors expressed pessimism that his resignation would affect the performance of the district in various developmental aspects.

Speaking to The New Times shortly after the  meeting, Habyarimana spoke well of Muragwa, saying he worked cordially  both with members of DAC and the District Executive.
He however, added that there were some government projects in the district that were supposed to be supervised by the Mayor, which were not executed well during his tenure.

In a separate interview with this reporter, the former Mayor maintained that he resigned for his personal reasons.

"I stepped down as the Mayor of Nyamasheke district due to my personal reasons and activities which I think I can’t do alongside the district’s duties,” he said, adding that he wanted to pursue further studies after serving for three years and five months as mayor.

Meanwhile, the same meeting appointed Oscar Nzeyimana, the vice mayor in charge of Economic Affair as the acting Mayor.
