FA sets aside two league trophies just in case

Local football governing body, Ferwafa has put in place two separate trophies, one at the Atraco v Marines game and the other at Huye where Mukura host APR on the final day of the season.

According to Ferwafa Chief Executive Officer Jules Kalisa, the new arrangement will ease the last minute pressures of transporting the league trophy to where the eventual winners will have played from.

Both Atraco and APR have the chance to win the league and the federation wants the winner to receive their trophy immediately after the final whistle. It’s the first time this arrangement is being used in Rwandan football.

"One trophy will be taken to Huye stadium while the other will be put at Amahoro stadium. "We want to give out the (league) trophy there and then. If Atraco win, they will be champions and will receive the trophy, but in case they lose and APR wins against Mukura, then they get the trophy in Huye,” Kalisa said.

The 2009 Cecafa/Kagame Cup winners, Atraco take on relegation battling Marines at Amahoro stadium.

Sam Timbe’s side goes into the last game of the season leading the standings with 50 points, two ahead of second-placed APR. A win against the Gisenyi-based side will earn Atraco a second consecutive league title.

However, the taxi-men side will be without suspended striker Peter Kagabo while Hamis Kitagenda and Jean Shyaka have all gained fitness.

Nine-time league champion APR return to Huye three days after the disappointment of being eliminated from this year’s MTN Peace Cup final by the same side on Monday.

Erik Paske’s team was held to a 1-all draw, a result that ensured Mukura reached their first Peace Cup final on away goals rule, having scored two in the first leg which ended in a 2-2 draw.
