Mukura Victory Sports head coach Afahmia Lotfi was not only excited to bring Rayon Sports’ unbeaten run to an end but he also sees the victory as a catalyst for his team to do even better in the second round of Rwanda Premier League.

Two first half goals from Jordan Dimbumba and Fred Niyonizeye aided Mukura to a 2-1 win over Rayon at Huye Stadium on Saturday, January 11. Fall Ngagne scored a consolation goal for the visitors but it was not enough to keep their unbeaten streak alive.

Lotfi said that he is coaching a better team compared to the previous season and he is optimistic they can build on the win over Rayon to perform better in the second round of the league campaign.

"It is the last game of the first round and it’s good for us to end with a victory against Rayon Sports who are at the top of the table. I believe we can build on this good result and improve our performance in the second round because I have a better team than the previous seasons," Lotfi told the press in a post-match interview.

Lotfi said that he knew the pressure was on Rayon who needed to win the game at all cost to preserve their unbeaten run.

"Rayon Sports were under more pressure than we were because they came here hoping to maintain their unbeaten run. We were more relaxed and that helped my players to excel. It was a tight game," he said.

He, however, admitted that the club will need to make some new signings in January to beef up the squad he has at his disposal.

"We didn't have tested players on the bench like Rayon did. Hopefully, we shall sign a couple of players to beef up the team," he added.

Rayon Sports had not lost a single league game since the beginning of the new season until Mukura pulled a major upset to bring their 14-match unbeaten run to an end.

In February 2022, the Huye-based side did the same when they beat APR FC 1-0 in Kigali to make them taste their first defeat after 50 games.
