Rwandan youngster Sean Mwesigwa scored the game-winner for his school Seven Lakes in 68-66 win over Cinco Ranch on Thursday, January 9-File

Rwandan youngster Sean Mwesigwa, 16, delivered the game-winning play with just 11.6 seconds remaining, grabbing a missed 3-point attempt and converting it into a go-ahead put-back lay-in.

His timely basket lifted his school, Seven Lakes, to a thrilling 68-66 victory over Cinco Ranch on Thursday, January 9, helping his team move into second place in District 19-6A.

His team had been trailing by two points going into the fourth quarter after leading by seven at halftime. However, Mwesigwa’s key play, combined with his consistent performance throughout the game, made the difference.

"Being 6-2 and not 5-3 (in district) is a very big difference,” said Mwesigwa, who had 13 points and seven rebounds. "It sets a tone for the rest of the district to show that we’re still here. We can be the team we always have been.”

Mwesigwa has been playing some of his best basketball this season. The 6-foot-3 (1.95m) guard scored 20 points in a win against Morton Ranch just days before this performance.

Known for his 3-point shooting, Mwesigwa adapted his game against Cinco Ranch, exploiting gaps in their defence by cutting to the basket and scoring in the paint. He made only one of two 3-pointers but made an impact with his all-around offensive game.

Mwesigwa has featured for junior Rwandan teams at various levels.

During the 2023 U16 Afrobasket, Mwesigwa demonstrated his prowess by scoring a total of 80 points throughout the tournament. He showcased his scoring ability and court vision, achieving game highs of 34 points against Tunisia and 21 points against Côte d'Ivoire.

His leadership and playmaking skills were instrumental as he guided his team to the quarter-finals.
