Some Rwandans have raised questions on social media platform X about whether it’s allowed to purchase and display the national flag inside their homes. Here’s a breakdown on what the law says:

1. No restrictions on displaying indoors

Jean-Baptiste Kayiranga, the Legal Adviser at the Ministry of Local Government (MINALOC), confirmed that there are no specific regulations prohibiting individuals from owning or displaying the national flag inside their homes.

"The law allows everyone, whether a citizen or a foreign national, to display the flag indoors as a symbol of pride,” he said.

2. Flags can’t be raised outside

While displaying the flag inside is permitted, raising it outside the house, such as on a flagpole in the yard or compound, is not allowed. "The flag is supposed to remain inside the home,” Kayiranga clarified.

3. No special permission required

Anyone wishing to purchase the national flag can do so without needing prior approval. Flags are available from MINALOC at prices ranging from Rwf5,000 to Rwf30,000.

4. Purchased online

For added convenience, flags can be purchased through Irembo platform, which provides an easy way for people to get their own national flag, Kayiranga added.

5. Display at any time

The official also noted that there are no specific occasions or times to display the flag. "People are free to show their national pride whenever they wish.”
