NYAMASHEKE - The Mayor of Nyamasheke district in the Western Province, Vincent Muragwa has resigned

According to sources at the district headquarters, Muragwa wrote his resignation letter to the District Advisory Council (DAC) Tuesday this week.

Speaking to The New Times on a phone interview, Celestin Habyarimana, the president of Nyamasheke District Advisory Council confirmed the move but could not reveal the reasons as to why the mayor had resigned.

"Yes it’s true the Mayor (Muragwa) wrote a letter to the members of DAC resigning from his official duties,  but right now there is nothing I can tell you about his resignation because I haven’t read the details in that letter,” Habyarimana said.

However an official at the district who spoke to The New Times on conditions of anonymity said that Muragwa’s resignation is based on ‘personal’ reasons.

Muragwa was appointed as the Mayor of Nyamasheke district in 2006.Prior to his appointment he was also the Executive Eecretary of the former Cyangugu province.

Some of the employees at the district who spoke to The New Times about the resignation said that they were shocked and surprised by the move. Efforts to contact Muragwa by phone were fruitless by press time.
