BUGESERA - The District Advisory Council of Bugesera Tuesday approved the resignation of the district Mayor and his deputy in charge of social affairs.

Mayor Gaspard Musonera and his vice Isabelle Mucyowera had earlier tendered in their resignations amidst controversy surrounding a tender that was awarded to a construction firm.

The scam had last week led to an indefinite suspension of the Mayor.

"They had tendered in their resignation letters and our work is to confirm them. Today we have just done, that” Claver Kabera, the Chairman of the District Council said.

The resignation of the two top district authorities came after the unearthing of mismanagement of over Rwf70 millions meant to build classrooms in the district, which still has cases of some children studying under trees.

Other district officials accused of involvement in the financial scam, were recently released from custody by the court.

They include the district Executive Secretary, Edward Munyaburanga, the Director of Infrastructure Cassien Kasire, Director of Finance Faustin Mugabo and Kingston Enterprise proprietor, Theophile Rwampogazi.

Kingston enterprise is a construction company that was contracted to construct the classrooms, but ended doing substandard work.

The District Council has laboured for months trying to get a solution to the ‘shoddy’ work that was done by Kingston enterprises.

"We have had no space to breath since Kingston messed up the constructions,” Kabera said.

Meanwhile the Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Affairs was tasked to take over the district leadership pending elections.
