Two injured

Two people yesterday, survived with mild injuries in a grenade attack that was once again aimed at the Gisozi Genocide memorial centre in Kigali.

According to the police spokesperson, Chief Supt, John Uwamungu, the grenade which was thrown at 7pm left two unidentified female passers-by (22 and 15 years of age) injured but they were rushed to hospital immediately.

They are however in a stable condition.

"The incident happened in a such a way that the person who threw the grenade was dropped off by a motorcycle in a distance of about 500 metres from the memorial centre towards the Kigali Independent University.”

"This is out of the security zone of the site which implies that whoever aimed at the centre is well aware that the site has tight security. So far we have arrested the motorcyclist who is also helping us with investigations,” Uwamungu explained.

"We appreciate the cooperation we are receiving from the public and urge them not to let down their guard but to remain vigilant”.

This is the third attack on the country's biggest memorial which is home to remains of over 300,000 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The first and second attacks came consecutively in April 2008 and 2009 during the Commemoration Weeks.

In one of the attacks, a policeman guarding the memorial was killed. However, security within the centre’s vicinity has since been tightened.
