Rwanda caretaker coach Jimmy Mulisa admits attackers still have work to do to become more clinical in front of goal.

Amavubi missed a host of glaring goal scoring opportunities that could have resulted in goals despite beating South Sudan 2-1 in Saturday’s 2024 CHAN qualifier at Amahoro Stadium.

The scoring issue has for years been one of Rwanda’s biggest challenges and Mulisa was clear that the players have a role to play to fix it.

"Yes, we do not have strikers but everything requires hard work to get that result. Mainly, it is not on the coach’s side but the players should work hard to know what to do in front of the goal,” he told the media in the post-match interview.

Despite beating South Sudan, Rwanda missed out on ticket to the CHAN 2024 finals which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania from February 1-22.

Mulisa revealed that their fate had been sealed before the game with South Sudan as the latter’s neighboring country Sudan had qualified after beating Ethiopia over two legs.

He said that he asked his players to win the game even if normal qualification was out of the equation.

"We went to play the match knowing that we couldn’t qualify. I told the players to behave well as we wanted to get 3 points. But it was not enough [to qualify]."

"There are many things we did not do well including scoring goals, but I believe our players have learned a lot from these matches and I advised them to start doing individual training," Mulisa added.
