New Bishop for Kibungo Diocese

EASTERN PROVINCE NGOMA—Bishop Kizito Bahujimihigo was installed yesterday as the new Bishop of Kibungo Diocese after outgoing bishop Frederic Rubwejanga turned 75, retirement age according to Vatican law. Rubwejanga had served Kibungo Diocese since 1992.

NGOMA—Bishop Kizito Bahujimihigo was installed yesterday as the new Bishop of Kibungo Diocese after outgoing bishop Frederic Rubwejanga turned 75, retirement age according to Vatican law. Rubwejanga had served Kibungo Diocese since 1992.

The ceremony, held at Cyasemakamba Stadium in Kibungo Sector Ngoma District, attracted many people. The Pope’s ambassador to Rwanda, Anselmo Guido Pecorari, was also present.

Rubwejanga requested incoming bishop Bahujimihigo to fight genocide ideologies and unite the youth. Rubwejanga, who says he and others narrowly survived the genocide.

Over 50000 people including six Catholic priests were killed during the genocide, with over 25000 killed in Nyarubuye parish in Kibungo Diocese only.

Information minister Prof. Laurent Nkusi who represented the government at the ceremony appreciated the good work the Catholic Church has and still doing towards the development of the country and people’s welfare more especially in the ongoing Green Revolution exercise.

Bishop Bahujimihigo, whose theme is "May they know you” promised to fight poverty.

"I have been installed as a Bishop of Kibungo Diocese at a time when poverty is the talk of the day,” Kizito said. He called upon all the people of Kibungo and Rwanda as a whole to join him in the fight against this problem.

Kibungo Diocese has achieved much in the sector, including building over ten schools, a hospital, and as well as starting up STELLA Express, a bus that travels routes countrywide.
