HUYE - Rwanda Defense Forces (RDF) soldiers from the first battalion based in Huye district on Saturday joined local residents at Matyazo, Ngoma sector,  in the construction of a  2 kilometre  road.

The road construction is part of a 20 kilometre stretch which will join Gafurwe to Rusisiro village.

The road construction is part of the activities to mark the ‘Army week’ that has seen the involvement of the RDF in different activities in support of the local community efforts.

Captain Frank Nyagatare of the RDF unit in Huye district said that the soldiers’ engagement in social activities was informed by the fact that the army is part and parcel of the society.

Residents of Matyazo cell expressed gratitude to the RDF soldiers for their participation in community development.
"The gesture shown by the RDF is humbling. It is the first time I am seeing a soldier joining residents in development activities.

We were not used to that kind of situation,” said Stratton Sibomana, a resident in Matyazo.
