GATSIBO- The Mayor of Gatsibo district, Jean Marie Vianney Murego and his vice in charge of economic affairs, Bossa Rwemalika, were arrested on Friday and are being held at Kabarore Police post allegedly over mismanaging state funds.

Police spokes person, John Uwamungu said that the police is still compiling details of the case and the suspects will appear in court once their files are complete.

According to the president of Gatsibo district’s advisory council, on July 17, the arrested suspects and the vice mayor in charge of socials affairs, Yvette Dusenge tendered in their resignation letters.

Twahirwa however could not give details behind the arrest but said it is in connection with the recent Auditor General and Ombudsman’s reports.

‘The two recent reports from the office of the Auditor General and Ombudsman reported a colossal amount of money that was unaccounted for in the district,’ Twahirwa said.

However, a source from Gatsibo district who spoke on condition of anonymity told The New Times that the case concerns a previous tender in the district.

"There was a tender of supplying exotic cows in the district that involved large sums of money, but later some amounts were allegedly misused.”

In the meantime, acting district Executive Secretary, Hyporate Ndamanyi will take over as the interim mayor.
A meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday where the governor is expected to appoint someone to head the district.
