HUNDREDS of jubilant Atraco fans yesterday celebrated the team’s historic 2009 Cecafa/ Kagame Cup victory with a high energy parade that flocked Kigali International Airport.
People clad in the team colours stood along the 4km parade route to the packed Amahoro Indoor Stadium where the team was greeted with a thunderous ovation from the excited crowd.
It was an odd experience to see rival fans from APR and Rayon Sport donning Atraco attire and jubilating alongside in the scorching sun.
Atraco fans President Amos Wacumu Vandamme told Times Sport that it was not just about the win but the fact that the taxi-men club had lifted the trophy on foreign soil.
"Atraco is the first Rwandan club to win the title on foreign soil in over ten years. Rayon Sport did but it is long time in 1998. APR have never won it outside Rwanda. Bravo to our boys (Atraco),” he excitedly said.
During the rally, fans danced arm-in-arm as the 55-year-old Hawa Murekatete sang jubilant songs for over two hours. Some fans had dyed their hair yellow for the occasion.
