Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Tuesday, December 10, announced that the country will nominate Mohamed Janabi as a candidate for the position of World Health Organization (WHO) regional director for Africa, Xinhua reports.
Janabi, the executive director of the Muhimbili National Hospital and president's advisor on health and medical affairs, will replace WHO Regional Director for Africa-elect Faustine Ndugulile, who passed on on November 27 while receiving medical treatment in India.
Ndugulile had been elected to the post in August during the 74th WHO General Assembly in Brazzaville, the Republic of the Congo, and was scheduled to assume office in March 2025.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony for newly appointed leaders in Zanzibar, Hassan expressed her confidence in Janabi's qualifications and extensive experience in healthcare.
Hassan said Janabi, a renowned cardiologist, was selected after the government reviewed the curricula vitae of five potential candidates.
