KHARTOUM, SUDAN - National League champions Atraco Fc showed nerves and late moments in sport, coming from a goal down to beat Mathare United 2-1 in the second semi-final match of the on-going Kagame Club Championship in Khartoum.
After missing several glaring chances, Atraco were made to pay in the 66th minute when a Vincent Okello cross was mis-timed by goalkeeper Jean Luc Ndayishimiye and found Chrispin Ochieng who finished in an empty net.
Sam Timbe’s side regrouped and piled pressure and got the equalizer at the stroke of full time through Aloua Gaseruka’s header off a well taken Andrew Lomami corner kick.
After a 1-1 score in the 90 minutes of normal time, Atraco made sure they snatched the winner in the 106th minute after substitute Mike Ssebalinga made a beautiful run and passed the ball to Lomami, who looped the ball past Mathare’s advancing goalkeeper Duncan Ochieng.
Atraco had earlier missed so many glaring scoring chances through the tournament top scorer Hamis Kitagenda and Lomami.
Atraco coach Timbe, who has won the Kagame Cup with SC Villa (2005) and Police FC (2006), can now keep his fingers crossed as he awaits the final against home side El Merreikh on Sunday
Mathare United handled by former Kenya national team coach Francis Kimanzi will now face guest side TP Mazembe in a play-off game.
The winning team will bag $50,000 (Rwf28 million), the runner-up $30,000 (Rwf17 million) and the third placed $20,000 (Rwf11 million).
Atraco line-up: Jean Luc Ndayishimiye, Godfrey Kateregga, Donatien Tuyizere (Mike Ssebalinga), Aloua Gaseruka, Charles Kawuma (Amani Uwiringiyimana), Johnson Bagoole, Peter Kagabo (Abedi Mulenda), Jean Shyaka (Capt), Hamis Kitagenda, Andre Lomami, Alimansi Kadogo.
