THE national basketball federation (Ferwaba) has confirmed that Kavedzija Vaceslav will lead the national ladies basketball team in the upcoming FIBA Africa Nations Championship for women (Afrobasket women) in Madagascar.

The federation’s decision comes days after the event was rescheduled from September to October.

Ferwaba’s president Eric Kalisa had earlier revealed to Times Sport that they were looking at recruiting a Tunisian coach to lead the team in Madagascar since Vaceslav would have only two and a half weeks to work with the women side after the men’s Afrobasket competition in Libya, which run from August 5-15 in Tripoli.

"Initially, that was the plan but now that the event has been postponed to October, there is no reason why we should bring in someone new,” Kalisa said.

"It would also be financially demanding on our part. Vaceslav did a good job in Zone 5 and we hope he will do the same in Madagascar,” the official added.

Kavedzija became Rwanda’s darling after successfully qualifying the men and women national sides to the Afrobasket events in Libya (men) and Madagascar (women) after captivating performances in the Zone 5 championships which were staged in Kigali back in February.

The men’s side finished second to Egypt while the women reigned supreme. The women Afrobasket event is now slated for October 9-18.

Of the twelve nations expected, eight have so far qualified. These include Madagascar (host), Mali (defending Champion), Senegal (1st runner-up), Angola (2nd runner-up), Mozambique (3rd runner-up), Cameroon (Zone 4), Rwanda (Zone 5) and South Africa (Zone 6).
