Cycling: What you need to know about Gravel National Championships

Rider Samuel Niyonkuru won Umusambi Gravel Race, the last gravel race to be played in Rwanda in September 2023.

The Rwanda Cycling Federation (FERWACY), in collaboration with Amani Team, has organized for the first time the Rwanda 2024 Gravel National Championship, which will be held on Sunday December 1.

The Championship will be attended by professional players, open to everyone, as non-professionals will also participate but they are required to register and pay Rwf 5000.

The male and female participants will compete for a distance of 66 kilometres, starting from Kimironko market, all the way to Lake Muhazi in Eastern Province, and then back to Kigali. The bikes that will be used are those designed for Gravel or Mountain Bike races.

What is a Gravel Race?

Gravel Race is a bicycle race that takes place on well-maintained dirt roads, using normal road racing bikes.

The last "Gravel" race to be played in Rwanda was the "Umusambi Race" in September 2023.
