Five Rwandan athletes on Wednesday night flew to Durban, South Africa, where they are expected to take part in the 11th Commonwealth Karate Championships due from November 28 to December 01.
The 2024 Commonwealth Karate Championships will attract about 1,000 competitors, officials and delegates from 25 nations including Rwanda whose delegation departed Kigali for the event on Wednesday night aboard RwandAir.
The competition will be staged in two sections, one for elites and the other for age groups.
Competing nations include England, Scotland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Trinidad and Tobago, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Rwanda among others.
Karate South Africa president Hanshi Sonny Pillay said that the tournament could be seen as part of a push to get the sport into the Commonwealth Games post-2026.
