Police have launched a wide range operation to crackdown on criminal gangs who have been terrorising people in Kigali, police spokesman John Uwamungu has revealed.

This follows a recent incident where suspects resisted arrest forcing the police to shoot dead two suspects at Mont Kigali in Nyamirambo.

According to Uwamungu, the incident occurred Friday last week when a group of suspected thugs with pangas attacked a couple seriously wounding the husband and raping his wife.

"We have got information that different areas have become hideouts of these hooligans who cause insecurity but they are not above the law,” Uwamungu warned.

"If such hooligans attack with pangas and throw stones at the police after injuring a man and raping his wife, the only alternative is shooting,” Uwamungu explained the police’s reason to shoot down the two suspects.

Police managed to apprehend two suspects Emile Bazigeniki, 24 and Noheli Rwagacaya, 22  during the incident.

The duo is held at Nyamirambo police station and their file has been handed over to the prosecution.

According to Uwamungu, the suspects found the couple and tried to steal from them and when the man resisted, he was attacked.

Uwamungu said that the man managed to escape but unfortunately his wife was raped.

"The man alerted the police who responded rapidly,” he said.

The injured man was then rushed to Kigali University Hospital (CHU/K).

Both suspects insist they have no connection to what happened that day.
