The Rwanda Basketball League (RBL)’s new season will tip off on January 24, 2025, the local game’s governing body (FERWABA) has announced.
The development is one of the resolutions of the federation’s general assembly held in Kigali on Saturday, November 16.
The men’s teams have been in the off season since September when APR won the championship after overcoming closest rivals Patriots after a 4-2 finals series victory while the women’s league offseason started in October.
Holders REG women will be coming into the new season looking to defend the championship they won after achieving a clean sweep on APR Women in the finals.
Meanwhile, the elections for the president of the federation are set for December 21. Incumbent president Desire Mugwiza has been at the helm of the federation since 2013.
During the same meeting, Ferwaba also approved the promotion of Azomco Global to the women’s topflight league, while Christian Basketball Team and Kigali Elite basketball club were announced as new teams that have joined Division two of the men’s league.
For the men’s topflight, Flame Basketball Club was confirmed as one of the two promoted teams along with Azomco Global Flame.
The latter, despite finishing last season’s Division two in third place, sealed a promotion ticket to the topflight league, replacing runners-up Keplerians who are not allowed to feature in the league due to the fact that it is a sister club to Kepler Basketball which is also competition in the same division.
