NORTHERN PROVINCE
Rwanda Defence Forces soldiers drawn from the 305 Brigade in conjunction with local residents will construct a 12 km road network which joins Mukinga to Remera sector in Musanze District.
The construction is part of the community support outreach programme undertaken by the RDF during the Army Week.
Other activities being carried out include construction of houses for residents whose houses were destroyed by floods in Busogo sector.
10 uncompleted houses, for vulnerable residents will also be constructed in Gakenke District during the week.
Earlier while launching the programme, the soldiers built a bridge linking Shingiro and Musanze sectors.
While partnering with the soldiers yesterday, Celestin Kalabayinga, Musanze District Mayor, said the district will utilise the free manpower to work on community development projects.
He noted that the construction of the community projects may go beyond one week, to ensure that those being started are completed.
Talking to The New Times, J Claude Nzabonimpa, one of the beneficiaries of the houses renovated by soldiers said: "I have been facing a problem of floods running from the Virunga mountains, I barely had no home.’’
The Army Week, which runs from June 26 to July 18, coincides with the 15th Liberation Day celebrations, during which residents are challenged to understand the implications of remembering the fallen heroes of the liberation struggle while working to improve their lives.
