MUHANGA — The National Aids Control Commission (CNLS) has donated food items and household materials to 12 families of Genocide orphans in Nyamabuye Sector, Muhanga District.

The donation worth Rwf1.7m was handed over by Dr. Anita Asiimwe, the Executive Secretary of CNLS, last Friday.

The team also visited the Kabgayi Genocide Memorial site to pay tribute to the victims, buried there. 

After laying wreaths on graves of the victims, Dr. Asiimwe, promised that CNLS will support Ibuka officials in their  bid to construct a better  memorial site.

She encouraged the orphans to fight genocide ideology and be pro-active in promoting development despite the challenges, they face.

Ramathan Ngoga, the orphan’s representative said that they need approximately Rwf 1.5m to start a self-support project for orphans.

He also stated that shelter and school fees were their main challenges.

"Lack of accommodation, water and electricity are some of the biggest problems, some students study under tough conditions,” Ngoga said.

While urging orphans to always help each other, Asiimwe asked the group to submit their project proposal to CNLS for funding.

She also promised to donate new condom brands to orphans to protect themselves against HIV/Aids.
