The deceased was shot and killed by Hamilton police at his Main Street West apartment. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which investigates police shootings, initially reported that there was an exchange of gunfire on the fifth floor of 1964 Main St. W., a condominium building in the Ainslie Wood West neighbourhood.
However, the SIU later clarified that it did not appear the 43-year-old fired a gun. Rather, as noted, two officers fired their service guns after "an interaction with a person of interest.”

A schedule by his family shows that the community will come together to pay respects to the deceased on Thursday, and afterwards, on Saturday, his burial will take place in Hamilton.
Arielle Kayabaga, a Canadian politician of Rwandan descent, referred to Kabera’s death as truly heartbreaking.
"I met Erixon Kabera 2 years ago, I have spoken to his family and they are devastated and are expecting a fair investigation on how he was murdered,” she wrote on X.
