Suspects in the murder case of Olga Kayirangwa have rejected the judge assigned to handle their case at the intermediate court of Nyarugenge, saying they don't believe he will give them justice.

The two men, Fred Nasagambe and Gideon Gatare, are being prosecuted as suspects in the death of Kayirangwa, 25, who died after visiting Nasangambe's home in Kigali on September 29.

Nasagambe, 28, and Gatare, 29, who are charged with murder and complicity in murder, respectively, are currently on remand after the primary court of Kicukiro said there were reasonable grounds for suspecting them of having committed the crimes.

They appealed against the decision at Nyarugenge intermediate court, but as the court was working on the case, the defendants protested against the judge in charge.

Why did the primary court remand them?

During the bail ruling at the primary court of Kicukiro, last month, the judge said the post-mortem report indicated that the woman had been engaged in sexual activity before her death and that she had injuries on her neck and chest. However, the judge’s claim was contrary to explanations presented by the defence lawyers during the hearing, since they had presented a report that showed that the woman had not engaged in sexual activity.

In their appeal, the two suspects told the judge at the intermediate court that his counterpart at the Kicukiro Primary Court judge misinterpreted the doctor’s report on the cause of Kayirangwa’s death.

The court is looking into their protest against the judge and will give a decision later.
