KARONGI — Crimes attributed to genocide ideology are persistent within districts of the Western Province, local authorities have said.

Reports from authorities indicate that suspected revisionists recently cut down banana plantations belonging to Genocide survivors in Ngororero District.

It was also reported that unknown students at Groupe Scolaire de la Paix in Ruhango Sector, Rutsiro District, allegedly intimidated their colleagues who are Genocide survivors.

The Mayor, Jean Ndimubahire, said local and district authorities are investigating such cases. The cases formed part  of the issues raised at a provincial security meeting held on Wednesday, in Karongi District.

Addressing the   meeting, the Western Province Regional Police Commander (RPC), Chief Supt. Gilbert Gumira Rwampungu, said that security has been tightened in the region ahead of this year’s Liberation Day celebrations slated for July 4.Gumira added  that previous crime reports indicate that  criminals take advantage of such celebrations to commit crimes.

The provincial governor Celestin Kabahizi, challenged district mayors to ensure that local leaders conduct night patrols and closely coordinate activities of community policing committees.

District leaders  were advised to set up a resolving fund from which money could be drawn to reward Local Defence personnel keeping security.
