United Generation Basketball Club (UGB) overcame Rwanda Energy Group (REG) to win the third edition of the Legacy Tournament with a narrow and tightly, 78-64 victory on Saturday, October 29, at BK Arena.
Enock Isezerano and Saidi Carmelo torched REG with 24 and 19 points, respectively, as UGB overcame a 11-point first half deficit to lift the title.
UGB easily took the first quarter 21-11 before claiming the second one by 27-24 to go into half-time break with a 48- 35 lead.
However, UGB continued to dominate the third quarter 20-17 and both sides equalized the last quarter 10-10, but UGB won the game.
In the women’s category, Young Sisters beat IPRC-Huye 62-58 to lift the trophy while Techno Warriors from Burundi dominated Gorillas Stars 63-52 to win the title in the veterans’ category.
On top of trophies as winners, UGB and Young Sisters also won Rwf500,000 in cash prize each.
Lycèe de Kigali (LDK) who were crowned champions in the Junior category after defeating Collège Saint André (CSA) in the final game 74-36.
The main purpose of the tournament was to remember and honour late Aimable Shampiyona and Jean de Dieu Nizeyimana, two personalities who significantly contributed to the growth of basketball at Lycée de Kigali (LDK) and in the country, between 1995 and 2007.
Largely regarded as a champion of sports, Shampiyona passed on in 2004 while Nizeyimana died in October 2007.
