The International Committee of the Red Cross has commissioned a Rwf 200m project to build houses for survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The programme that will see 60 houses being built was launched yesterday by Gasabo Mayor, Claudine Nyinawagaga, at the estate’s site at Bumbogo sector.

According to the Director General of ICRC-Rwanda, Appollinaire Karamaga, the district approached them to seek a way in which vulnerable children can be helped by providing accommodation alongside others.

"We have officially started the construction of 60 houses to keep our mission of helping and protecting lives of those who are helpless,” Appollinaire Karamaga said at the construction site.

Upon completion, the houses will be allocated to people who will be identified as vulnerable by both the ICRC and local government authorities.
