Alumni of Mount Kigali University (MKU) have come together to provide medical insurance (Mutuelle de santé) for over 130 residents of Kinunga Cell in Gikondo Sector, Kicukiro District.

The initiative was launched on October 27, during a community Umuganda service in Kinunga Cell, along the main road from Rwandex to Kanogo. MKU alumni were joined by the university’s student association in the activity.

James Mugume, president of MKU’s Alumni Committee and founder of Health Alert Organization, emphasized the alumni’s commitment to community support.

"This is not just charity, but a responsibility we have taken on as alumni of a reputable university, to uplift those in need and make a tangible difference in their lives," he said.

The university’s student association were joined by MKU alumni during a community work service( Umuganda) along the main road from Rwandex to Kanogo in Kinunga Cell,

Mugume highlighted the initiative’s significant impact: "By providing medical insurance, we are ensuring these families have access to essential healthcare services, which is fundamental to improving their quality of life.”

Mugume also praised Mount Kigali University’s commitment to empowering its alumni, noting, "MKU is dedicated to supporting our professional growth.”

He added that MKU offers a 10 percent discount on Master’s degree programs for alumni and plans to introduce PhD programs next year, creating further opportunities for academic advancement.

"These initiatives aim to nurture professionals who will lead the development of their communities,” Mugume stated.

Veneranda Nyirahirwa, a former Member of Parliament and MKU alumna, echoed Mugume's sentiments. "We are thrilled with this activity, and hope that in the future, we can expand it to make an even greater impact on more people,” she remarked.

Nyirahirwa underscored the importance of health in Rwanda’s national vision, saying, "The nation’s goal is to have a population with good health, and part of achieving that is ensuring access to quality education. Health is a priority, as it enables people to pursue their goals and contribute to society.”

She extended an invitation to prospective students, encouraging them to join MKU’s vibrant alumni community. "Mount Kigali University is known for its quality education. By joining us, new students can help build the future we envision for our country,” she said.

Kinunga Cell Executive Secretary, Jean de Dieu Uzababakiriho, thanked the alumni for their support. "Mount Kigali University has been a strong partner in our community’s social advancement through various initiatives. It’s inspiring to see this cooperation extend to students and alumni,” he said.

This initiative follows the establishment of a new MKU alumni association committee in July, which represents over 10,000 graduates worldwide in diverse fields including politics, healthcare, entrepreneurship, and the arts. The committee aims to foster collaboration among alumni to benefit their communities.

MKU Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Martin Kimemia, expressed optimism about the alumni community’s continued growth. "With more postgraduate courses and a PhD program launching next year, we expect even more alumni to join us in making a positive impact,” he noted.
