National schools’ competition marred by mercenaries

TOP performers at this year’s inter-school games that climaxed last Sunday will represent Rwanda in the East African Secondary Schools Games slated for August in Fort-Portal, Uganda.

This was confirmed by Dr. Mathias Harebamungu, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education.

"This year, players have to undergo intensive training before departing for Uganda because we want to take a team of winners, who are ready to bring back medals,” he said.

Coste from Nyanza district were crowned football champions (boys) after piping favourites Ecole de Science 1-0. The only goal of the thrilling encounter was scored by Morris Dushimiyimana alias Diarra.

In volleyball (girls), Indagaburezi from Ruhango edged Rwaza 3-2 while Groupe Scolaire officiel de Butare took the boys’ accolade after an impressive 3-0 straight set victory over Groupe Scolaire de Gahini.

In basketball (girls), Ecole Notre dame de Citeaux from Kigali City beat ESPANYA from Nyanza district 56 -36 points while Ecole Technique St Joseph from Nyamirambo overpowered Ecole Secondaire Gisenyi 58-54 in a highly contested boys’ final.

APAPEKI (girls) and College Gisenyi (boys) took the handball prizes.
Winning teams walked away with trophies and cash prizes.

Meanwhile, Aspej secondary school and APAPE high school have been banned after fielding mercenaries, reports OSTINE ARINAITWE.
The two schools were thrown out of the competition and according to the technical director of the National Post primary school competitions Aaron Rurangirwa; they will miss out next year.

"We shall ban them (Aspej and APAPE) from next year’s post primary competitions. The disciplinary committee is also drawing up severe measures for schools which use mercenaries,” he revealed.
