JOHNNY Murengezi will enjoy his top spot at the National Rally Championship until late September when the coveted KCB Mountain Gorilla rally sets in.

Murengezi took advantage of a hefty penalty on national champion Davite Giancarlo at the wheel of his Subaru Impreza to claim second place in the two-day Rallye du Huye which climaxed on Sunday.

Valery Bukera won the race but doesn’t qualify to compete on the NRC because he drives with a Burundian driving license.

" It’s true that Bukera won the race but Murengezi still tops the NRC charts because Bukera drives with a Burundian driving license,” the organiser and clerk of the course Christian Gakwaya explained.

Rallye de Huye boosts of a coefficient of four which means that Murengezi amassed 80 points after wining the Rwandan legion.

Elefter Mitraros is second on the charts while Giancarlo, Christakis Fitidis and Olivier Costa follow in third, fourth and fifth slots.

The KCB Gorilla rally is slated for September 18-20 will be the second round on the 2009 National Rally Championship.

This year’s championship will be three rounds less after Rwanda Automobile Club (RAC)’s decision to call off two rally sprints and Rallye du Nord due to bad weather.
