Rwanda has undoubtedly made significant strides in its response to the recent Marburg virus outbreak.
The successful discharge of the last infected patients is a testament to the country's robust healthcare system and the dedication of its healthcare workers and for which they deserve commendation.

For weeks following the positive identification of the first cases which included fatalities, our healthcare works have been burning the midnight candle to not only ensure the patients gets out of harm, but most importantly work towards minimising the spread of the various in communities, which was to a very large extent successful.
However, as we continue to celebrate this is a significant milestone, it is crucial to maintain a high level of vigilance.

Scientific studies – and this has been confirmed by the Ministry of Health - have shown that the Marburg virus can persist in the body for an extended period, even after symptoms have subsided.
This underscores the importance of continued monitoring and follow-up care for individuals who have recovered from the infection. By implementing rigorous surveillance measures, we can effectively mitigate the risk of potential re-emergence.
Furthermore, it is imperative that the general public remains vigilant and adheres to public health guidelines. Simple yet effective practices, such as regular handwashing, can significantly reduce the transmission of infectious diseases, including Marburg virus.
