EASTERN PROVINCE

BUGESERA—As Gacaca courts wind up its work in the district, one convict on Wednesday this week escaped from Nyamata transit centre.

Andre Barihenda of Maranyundo in Nyamata sector reportedly vanished from the centre in the afternoon, a security official who preferred not to be named said.

The guard said Barihenda had recently been convicted to 30 years in prison for charges of Genocide by the traditional courts.

Lax security was blamed for the escape and it is possible there was mutual cooperation between the criminal and those keeping him in custody.

The transit centre accommodates suspects drawn from distant government prisons at Rilima who are supposed to face their charges in Nyamata. Barihenda, was yet to be transferred to Rilima.
