Buhanga forest is now part of Volcanoes National Park, according to a new ministerial order.

Volcanoes National Park, in Musanze District, is known for its Rwanda gorilla safaris, since it is home to the highest number of mountain gorillas in the Virunga conservation area.

The forest is found within Buhanga Eco Park, one of the safari locations that surround Volcanoes National Park. The Eco Park covers 31 hectares of land.

It is located in the community of Nyakinama, approximately eight kilometres west of Musanze town, and boasts gorgeous flora and cultural tradition linked with it.

Buhanga is a Kinyarwanda term that literally translates as "creation."

Legend has it that Rwanda&039;s origin began here.

The first King of Rwanda, Gihanga, is said to have founded the Kingdom of Rwanda from this location.

As a result, prior to the monarchy's demise, all of Rwanda's kings used to perform ceremonies in the forest. The forest boasts a large number of drago and ficus trees which combine to provide a lush canopy. It is also home to a variety of bird and butterfly species.
