WESTERN PROVINCE

RUSIZI – The district has received 16,000 iron sheets from the Ministry of Local Government, to shelter residents who were affected by last year’s earthquake.

The materials were delivered on Monday by the ministry officials.

Speaking to The New Times yesterday, Marceline Muhimpundu, the district official in charge of disasters and the Fund for Support of Genocide Survivors (FARG) said they have so far distributed 9,000 iron sheets to 200 beneficiaries in Nkombo and Nkanka sectors with  each receiving 45 iron sheets.

"The donation is meant to shelter those who were left homeless by the earthquake that hit this area last year. We give priority to those in poor living conditions,” she said.

She disclosed that the district expects another batch of 16,000 iron sheets from the ministry which they will distribute to other victims in other sectors of the district.

Muhimpundu, says the 45 iron sheets which are given to each individual can fully construct a self contained house.

She urged the beneficiaries to use the items efficiently and effectively and warned them that such items are strictly prohibited from being sold.

One of the beneficiaries, Deborah Mukandori said, "Today I am very happy to have received this sort of support. I believe this will improve my living standards, I thank the government for this effort.”
