Buffaloes 28-3 Sharks

Sunday proved that rugby in Rwanda still has a lot of promise. The quality of both attacking and defensive rugby displayed during the Buffalo-Sharks game was breathtaking. The afternoon kicked off with a light but impressive training session of the national ladies’ side, the Blackbacks.

While the Sharks looked for an upset, the reigning champions were determined to keep their winning streak. Buffaloes ran in three tries as they crushed a stubborn Sharks’ side 28-3.

Buffalo’s Eric Mbarushimana managed to sneak in a try towards the end of half time and Lucien Bikamba did not make a mistake with a neat conversion.

The sharks however reduced the deficit to four after a well-worked penalty by Bernabe Ngizwenayo.

The second half saw a more composed Buffalo side being cheered on with "Sharks return to the water!” calls from the fans.

The introduction of Buffaloes’ veteran Alex Araire seemed to pay off dividends as Bikamba scored a magnificent try before top try scorer Vincent Kamali sealed Sharks’ fate with another. After the game, Buffaloes’ coach-player Gerald Nsenga attributed the team’s consistent to a tight training schedule.

"I think we are playing well because we are disciplined on and off the pitch. We also take our training sessions very seriously,” he said. Earlier in the day, former champions Gorillas were awarded free points after Lion de Fer’s failure to raise a full team for the match.

The Lion de Fer coach Jean de Paix Hategekimana reasoned that many of his players were out of the country.
