MTN Rwandacell PLC reaffirmed its commitment to environmental conservation on Saturday, October 26, by participating in Umuganda, the monthly community work exercise. The company planted 100 trees in Nyamweru Village, Kanyinya Sector in Nyarugenge District, in another "go green" milestone marked in its ongoing tree-planting initiative.
This environmental initiative, which started in 2023, is a key element of MTN Rwanda’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) strategy. To date, the company has planted more than 25,000 trees across the country, as part of its dedication to social responsibility and sustainable business practices.
Christina Mukundwa, MTN’s Corporate Affairs Manager, said that environmental stewardship remains a central focus of the company’s mission.
She noted: "MTN reaffirms its commitment to sustainability and community welfare through active environmental stewardship."
"By planting trees, we aim to reduce our carbon footprint, support biodiversity, and contribute to Rwanda’s climate resilience. This campaign of tree planting aligns with our Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) goals, and symbolises our dedication to responsible business practices and a healthier future," she said.
"We are proud to partner with communities in building a greener Rwanda, and we see each tree planted today here in Kanyinya as an investment in the collective well-being and environmental prosperity of our nation," she added.

David Kayitare, MTN’s Corporate Social Responsibility representative, said that the telecom company prioritises giving back to the community beyond selling products and services.
"We selected Kanyinya because it is a high-priority area for environmental restoration. Last year, we planted 25,000 trees to mark our 25th anniversary. It is a developmental initiative, and together we made it possible,” he said.
Kayitare explained that MTN focuses on giving back in areas such as education, health, environment, and similar other various government policies.
"This comes from a certain percentage of our total revenue. We aim to create an MTN forest that offers a relaxing environment, fully installed with WiFi and other facilities.
He urged the community to care for the trees, noting that they are the primary beneficiaries. "We wanted to give back to them. We work for Rwandans and strive to reinvest in them. It’s not just about selling, but also about supporting the community,” he added.

Local authorities welcomed MTN’s involvement, with Kanyinya’s Executive Secretary, Emmanuel Dusabeyezu, saying: "MTN is our valuable partner in environmental conservation and protection. These efforts also create a positive relationship between the community and the company."
Dusabeyezu warned against the dangers caused by grazing animals and human activities that often threaten young trees.
"It is prohibited to allow animals such as cows, goats, and sheep, graze outside their designated paddocks. Anyone who violates this rule faces punishment. This policy is well-known, and we have reminded the community once again," he added.
