SOUTHERN PROVINCE

HUYE — The district council last Saturday voted new leaders to fill the posts of mayor and Vice Mayor, which fell vacant two months ago.

Francois Uhagaze was elected as the new Mayor, replacing Aimable Twagiramutara, while Marie Claire Mukamusonera was elected as Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Affairs. She replaces Ildefonse Gasana.

Talking to The New Times after the elections, Uhagaze, who was the Executive Secretary of Nyamabuye Sector, in Muhanga District, expressed joy over his new appointment, promising to offer his best to develop Huye District.

"I cannot say it is an easy or hard task before I try but I have to discus with the existing staff and that has to be after  I start performing my duties. I think I will succeed as I did in the sector,” he said.

Mukamusonera, who was formerly working with the Tea Development authority, OCIR –THE, said she would use her previous experience to improve the economic performance of the district.

"The poor infrastructure is one of the signs of bad economic performance of Huye District,” she pointed out, adding that the district has the potential to develop due to its proximity to a number of institutions like the National University of Rwanda.

Dr Charles Ndagije, the chairman of the district advisory council, urged the new leaders to be transparent in their work, while collaborating with the council in order to succeed in their new offices.
