The importance of a defence lawyer

Have you ever lost a case you thought you would have won? A case you really felt you were in a position to successfully defend yourself? The case you thought you had all evidence and confidence to explain to the court your innocence?

This is a tragedy happening to many people in our country and probably some others. I discussed with a number of people that had faced the challenge of being convicted. Some said they thought they had the confidence to represent themselves before court.

"Hiring a defence lawyer would not be a serious issue but the fear to lose both the money and the case is the reason some opt to represent themselves,” says Joseph Agaba.

It’s not as easy as we think. In all careers of life there are people with more knowledge as compared to others not because they were born intelligent. This however is simply because they learnt law as their profession. Their work is to know, read and apply all the laws in use.

The questions of law, crime and other cases are very complicated to a lay man. Lawyers have the experience in the division or a specific discipline to the law, representing the defendant and the plaintiff at the hearing.

Even if a person has the right to choose to represent him or herself, not all people have a clear knowledge of the law and ethics. There are many types of lawyers. Each lawyer has his own area of expertise and specialization in legal matters.

Defence lawyers in criminal cases act as the face and have the ability to deal with the case of the accused. Like doctors, lawyers have their own specialists in each field in relation to the law and criminal cases.

These lawyers are experts not only in the case, but the procedures are carried out in the courts especially in the collection of evidence.

You cannot have any problems or concerns in the way the case was moved because of the experience that the lawyer has, the development of the case at a time of rest for the lawyer. The law is flexible, and there are so many things to consider.

Having qualified personnel to defend a case, for instance criminal or other cases, stands less chances for the case to be dismissed or less convinced of sanctions.

Defence lawyers must always be the best defence ever in handling issues brought into their services. It is very hard to risk yourself by not seeking confidential information that you share with your lawyer. You should be able to obtain important information to his lawyer without affecting the outcome of the case.

"It’s not a guarantee that lawyers win all cases but the percentage of their winning is high. We have to go to them and seek their advice whenever we are not sure of what to do as far as the law is concerned,” Peter Nuwagaba says.

Obviously, there are a number of people who cannot afford to hire a defence lawyer. Such people are not aware that the nation does care for them as far as justice is concerned. The state provides them a free defence lawyer.

Let’s try our best to protect ourselves by seeking legal advice from lawyers and try to know the law because the only tactic in a defence lawyer is the knowledge of laws and its interpretation.

If you ever lost a case you thought winning was obvious, it’s high time you checked where you went wrong. It better not be the lack of a lawyer.
