GICUMBI— The Prime Minister, Bernard Makuza has castigated contractors who win local tenders only to build weak structures that cost government more resources.

Speaking in Gicumbi district, as part of his nationwide tour, the PM described such people as "enemies of development.”

"These types of contractors are taking us nowhere. Something should be done to bring such contactors to book,” the PM emphasized. He was referring to some school structures that are in appalling conditions and yet government had financed their construction.

Makuza urged residents of Bicumbi to work hard to steer economic development.

The premier was addressing residents at Miyove sector after touring Kageyo, Byumba and Nyankenke Sectors, as part of his countrywide tour to evaluate development activities.

"There is need for collective effort to prevent soil erosion through construction of terraces along hilltops, live in settlements and massively join health insurance in order to eradicate poverty and attain economic development,” said Makuza.

During his tour of the district, Makuza inspected Francoise Mugiranaza’s modern agriculture and livestock farm in Nyamiyaga cell of Kageyo Sector.

The farmer specialises in the growing of wheat, maize, vegetables and raising fresian cows, pigs and rabbits.

In Byumba Sector, Makuza visited Groupe Scolaire Notre Dame du Bon Conseil and hailed students for their excellent performance in national examinations and maintenance of a clean environment at the school. He also toured the school’s library, ICT department, biogas installations and modern livestock farm.

"You should keep a high level of discipline and hard work to maintain the good name of this school,” he told the students.

The Prime Minister wrapped up his tour by visiting and awarding certificates to an ‘Itorero’ cultural group made up of 384 local leaders at Nyankenke Sector, who had completed two-week civic education course.

He also visited Miyove Health Center, which was recently expanded at a cost of Rwf129 million from Decentralisation and Community Development Project (DCDP).

The Premier was accompanied by local government Minister, Protais Musoni, Cabinet Affairs minister, Dr. Charles Murigande and Agriculture Minister Christopher Bazivamo.

Others included the Governor of Northern Province, Aime Bosenibamwe, Mayors of Gicumbi, Rulindo, Gakenke, Musanze and Burera Districts.
