The 2009 Kigali beauty pageant contest has been delayed for four months now and according to Kigali City Council, people should not give up.
KCC, the organisers of the event, said that preperations are slowly building up, but no particular date has been fixed.
Jeanne Gakuba, KCC’s Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs, said that the delay was because the city council was busy with the organization of the 15th commemoration of the 1994 Rwanda Genocide against the Tutsi.
According to KCC Spokesperson, Bruno Rangira, the fact that the beauty pageant is a new phenomenon in the country, its organization has to be watched closely so that international standards are met.
Rangira however added that KCC has not shelved the contest.
"The preparations are underway, and we’re now considering putting in place the office of the Miss to be,” Rangira said "A proposal has been drafted for the sponsored event.”
The Minster of Culture and Sports Joseph Habineza said KCC has not yet approached his office for support as they did in the previous Miss Kigali beauty contest.
"The last time it was organized by KCC. They came to my office for advice but this time they haven’t yet consulted me,” he said.
In November 2007, KCC successfully organized the first ever Kigali beauty pageant contest. 18 year old Cynthia Akazuba was crowned Miss Kigali 2007 by the First Lady Jeannette Kagame at a glamorous function held at Jali Club.
Akazuba walked away with Frw3 million, a Kigali-Nairobi return air ticket and one nights free accommodation at Nairobi’s Serena Hotel.
