NGORORERO — The Mayor of Ngororero District, Cyperien Kizimana has said over 99 percent of land in the district has been protected from environmental degradation. He was speaking last week at the closure of a week-long environmental conservation campaign in the district.

"To date, our local conservation efforts cover  approximately 98% of the land masses and the remaining part will be completed by the end of this year,” he said.

While taking a working tour along the Nyabarongo River banks, Kizimana thanked area residents for planting trees which he said will go a long way to prevent soil erosion.

Francois Bagayire, a resident, said agricultural production will improve after fighting soil erosion.

"Our land loses productivity because of erosion …but as long as we have planted trees to protect it, agricultural output will increase rapidly,” he said.

Ngororero is among the districts covered by  a huge chunk of Nyabarongo tributaries.
