KIGALI - Dr Diane Gashumba was yesterday elected as the new president of the National Womens Council to replace Odda Gasinzigwa who was recently appointed to head the Gender Monitoring Team.

Gashumba, who is the Director of Muhima Hospital, won the by-election that pitted her against Stephanie Nyiranzurukero with a landslide 80% of the 70 votes cast. She has been in charge of health in the Council.

Another vacant post that was filled yesterday is that of Secretary of NWC which was taken by Flavia Sarafina.

Sarafina, who is the Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Public Service and Labour, had contested the post with Mariette Mujawamariya. She garnered 62%.

Aline Mukabalisa was elected to replace Gashumba to head the health slot in the council after beating Rujari Mukamuvunyi.

The elections were held at the conclusion of the NWC General Assembly that took place during the weekend and was graced by the Minister of Gender and Family Promotion, Dr Jeanne d’Arc Mujawamariya. 

Closing the assembly, Mujawamariya, appreciated the women’s efforts that made the assembly a success.

"I am grateful that we have been able to spend the two days to prepare how best we can work and improve on the life of women and children in the country,” said the minister in her closing remarks.
