In a video circulated by one of the local media on Monday, October 14, school girls from Kapuri Primary School in South Sudan pay tribute to Rwanda Defence Force’s soldiers who built them a school. They say even their children will attend the school, and that it is green and clean.

These children, who are barely teenagers, are hopeful that going to a proper school doesn’t end with them. Even their own children having a place to study is in their hopes. It has to be noted that before the school was built, they would take their studies under trees.

Silence of guns is commendable, and must be a given in order for peace to take place. However, political security alone is not peace. One can not dream of a better future, or even look forward to another day at all if they are not at peace.

While peace has many indicators, education, health, inclusion, and a healthy society in general are a foundation of sustainable peace. The lack of these, adding on poverty, can also lead to instability.

The work is not fully done when the war is over. The Rwandan Army’s humanitarian assistance in different countries is beneficial in building resilient communities that are ready to face today’s and tomorrow’s challenges. They are building the Africa we want, brick by brick.

Creating hope is not an easy task. Hope that is not just for one more day, but one where the young and old can freely dream, not for just themselves but also for future generations to come. This hope and certainty of the future are the peace.
