NORTHERN PROVINCE

GICUMBI – The district authorities have  launched a campaign to vaccinate all dogs in Byumba Sector.

The move comes days after 16 people from Gacurabwenge, Gisuna and Kibali cells of Byumba Sector were last week bitten by stray dogs. They were rushed to Byumba Hospital for treatment, but were immediately discharged.

"The stray dogs which bit the 16 residents of Byumba town emerged from deep in the villages of other sectors,” said Byumba Sector Executive Secretary, Jean Marie Vianey Gahano, adding that  26 stray dogs that have no identified owners have so far been killed, as a measure to curb the menace.

The decision to vaccinate all dogs owned by residents in the district was reached at a security meeting chaired by Mayor Bonane Nyangezi last Friday, and attended by all Sector Executive Secretaries and other district officials.
