Tunisia, Morocco book ‘09 Afrobasket tickets

Tunisia and Morocco have booked their tickets for Afrobasket Libya 2009. The two nations qualified after finishing first and second respectively in their Zone (1) qualifiers which climaxed last Friday in Sale, Morocco.

Tunisia and Morocco have booked their tickets for Afrobasket Libya 2009. The two nations qualified after finishing first and second respectively in their Zone (1) qualifiers which climaxed last Friday in Sale, Morocco.

After tying on points (7 points), the two played a decisive game. The sides were still level after full time 69-69 but Tunisia broke away in extra time after a hard fought 82-71 victory. Algeria finished third.

Tunisia and Morocco will now represent Zone 1 at the 25th edition of the Afrobasket competition scheduled for August 5th-15th in Libya.

The pair joins the likes of Nigeria, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt, Cape Verde, Rwanda, defending champion Angola and hosts Libya among others.

Afrobasket is the most coveted basketball competition on the continent. The biannual event has been largely dominated by Angola. Since its inception back in 1962, Angola who won the last edition (2007) has won the event a record nine times.

Senegal and Egypt are level with five titles; Ivory Costa and Central African Republic have two titles each while Morocco has won it once.
